How to enable 3rd party cookies for various browsers - Outlook Plugin integration requirement (FireFox, Edge, Safari)

Certain integrations or embedded features within applications might need to access your email service indirectly to function correctly. Third-party cookies, in this context, are cookies set by a domain different from the one you are currently visiting (the application you are using) but are necessary for seamless interaction with your mail provider. By allowing third-party cookies specifically for your mail provider's URL, you enable these integrations to work as intended without compromising your overall privacy settings.

Enabling Third-Party Cookies for Your Mail Provider in Mozilla Firefox

Follow these steps to allow third-party cookies specifically for your mail provider's URL in Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox.
  2. Click the menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & Security.
  5. Under the Cookies and Site Data section, ensure that "Standard" is selected. This setting generally blocks known trackers and third-party cookies in Private Windows.
  6. To create an exception for your mail provider:
    • Click the Manage Exceptions... button.
    • In the "Address of website" field, enter the mail provider URL you identified earlier (e.g., https://mail.google.com/).
    • Click Allow.
    • Click Save Changes.
  7. Close the about:preferences tab.

Firefox will now allow third-party cookies specifically from your mail provider's URL while maintaining your chosen general cookie settings.

Enabling Third-Party Cookies for Your Mail Provider in Microsoft Edge

Follow these steps to allow third-party cookies specifically for your mail provider's URL in Microsoft Edge:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Click the three dots (...) menu in the top right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Cookies and site permissions.
  5. Click on Manage and delete cookies and site data.
  6. Ensure that Block third-party cookies is toggled ON (this is the default and recommended setting for enhanced privacy).
  7. To create an exception for your mail provider:
    • Under the "Allow" section, click Add.
    • In the "Site" field, enter the mail provider URL you identified earlier (e.g., https://outlook.live.com/).
    • Ensure that "Include third-party cookies on this site" is checked.
    • Click Add.
  8. Close the Settings tab.

Edge will now allow third-party cookies specifically from your mail provider's URL while generally blocking them for other websites.

Enabling Third-Party Cookies for Your Mail Provider in Safari

Follow these steps to allow third-party cookies specifically for your mail provider's URL in Safari:

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click on Safari in the menu bar (top left of your screen).
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Click on the Privacy tab.
  5. Ensure that Prevent cross-site tracking is checked. This is Safari's default setting to block third-party cookies.
  6. To create an exception for your mail provider:
    • Click on Manage Website Data....
    • In the search bar (top right), type the domain of your mail provider URL (e.g., google.com for Gmail, live.com for Outlook.com, yahoo.com for Yahoo Mail).
    • Select the entry for your mail provider.
    • Click Remove.
    • Click Done.
  7. Close the Preferences window.

Safari's approach is slightly different. By removing the existing website data and then interacting with your mail provider again within the application requiring the integration, Safari might prompt you or allow the necessary third-party cookies for that specific session or based on the application's request. If issues persist, you might need to temporarily uncheck "Prevent cross-site tracking" while using the integrated feature and then re-enable it afterward for general browsing. Some applications might also guide you through a specific permission request within Safari.
