When you receive an InDesign file that was built using images from the ProjectMark DataHub, those images won't automatically appear on your machine — they need to be linked to your own DataHub connection. The Auto-Link feature in the ProjectMark InDesign Plugin detects these missing links and lets you restore them instantly, either all at once or one at a time.
⚠️ Requirement: DataHub Access
Auto-Link only works if you have access to the same DataHub where the original images were stored. If you don't have DataHub access, the plugin won't be able to restore the missing links. Contact your account administrator to request access before proceeding.
What is Auto-Link?
Auto-Link is a feature in the ProjectMark InDesign Plugin that automatically detects images placed from the DataHub when a file was created by someone else. Because those image files live on the original creator's machine (not yours), InDesign marks them as missing links. Auto-Link bridges that gap by reconnecting each image directly to your DataHub — no manual file searching required.
When does this happen?
You'll encounter missing DataHub links whenever you open an InDesign file that was:
- Built by a colleague using images from the ProjectMark DataHub
- Shared with you to edit, update, or finalize
This is expected behavior — it simply means the images need to be re-linked to your DataHub connection.
Opening the Links Panel
Once you open the shared InDesign file, navigate to the ProjectMark DataHub panel in InDesign. Click on the Links tab to see the full list of placed images.
Any image that was originally sourced from the DataHub will appear with a Link Missing badge next to it. The status bar at the bottom of InDesign may also display an error count — this is normal and expected at this stage.
Option A: Relink All at Once
If you want to restore every missing link in a single action, click the Relink All button at the top of the Links panel. The plugin will connect to the DataHub and automatically match each image back to its source file.
While the process runs, you'll see a Relinking… status indicator. Once complete, all images will be restored and the document will display correctly.
This is the fastest option when you want to restore all images without reviewing them individually.
Option B: Relink Individual Images
If you only need to restore specific images — or want to review each one before relinking — you can relink them one at a time directly from the Links panel.
Locate the image with the Link Missing badge and click the link icon next to it. The plugin will reconnect that individual image to the DataHub without affecting the others.
This option is useful when you're working with a large document and only need to update select images, or when you want to verify each file before relinking.
After Relinking
Once all links are restored — whether through Relink All or individually — the images will display correctly in your document and the Link Missing badges will clear. The document is now ready for you to edit, update, and save.
If any images still show as missing after relinking, confirm that those files exist in the DataHub and that you have access to. If the issue persists, contact your account administrator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to be connected to the DataHub before relinking?
A: Yes. Make sure you're logged in to the ProjectMark DataHub panel inside the plugin before clicking Relink All or relinking individual files.
Q: What if some images relink successfully but others still show Link Missing?
A: This typically means those specific files are not available in the DataHub you have access to. Reach out to the file's original creator or your account administrator to verify file availability.
Q: Will relinking change the images in my document?
A: No. Relinking simply reconnects the existing image placements to the correct source files in DataHub. It doesn't modify or replace the images themselves.
Q: Can I relink files if I only have view-only access to the DataHub?
A: Yes — relinking only reads files from the DataHub, so view-only access is sufficient.
